MCP category coverage in 2026: where the servers actually are
MCP coverage is bimodal. Developer-adjacent categories carry 13 ranked servers; the knowledge-worker end carries 0. But the thin categories are not empty — they are full of ChatGPT app integrations and short on servers you can actually install. Knowing which of the two you are looking at changes the answer entirely.
The short answer
Across 30 primary categories and 133 ranked servers, the median category carries 7. The top of the distribution — Analytics & Data, Developer Tools, Databases and Cloud & Infrastructure — sits at 11–13. The bottom sits at 0–2. If you are asking whether there is an MCP for your job, the useful question is not does one exist but does one exist for the client I use, and for the thin categories those have different answers.
The categories with the fewest installable servers
Ranked entries are servers that passed editorial review and can be configured in a client. ChatGPT app listings are brand integrations installed through the Apps directory — a real part of the ecosystem, but not something you add to a mcp.json. Counting them together is what makes a category look served when it is not.

Thin is not the same as absent
Why the split falls where it does
Coverage follows the builders. The saturated categories — Analytics & Data, Developer Tools, Databases and Cloud & Infrastructure — are the ones developers automate for themselves, and MCP servers were built first by the people who wanted them for their own work. The thin end is not technically harder; a calendar API is considerably easier to wrap than a Kubernetes cluster.
What the thin categories share is a different buyer. Education, design, productivity and sales tools are sold to people who do not edit a JSON config file, so the vendors serving them reached for the distribution channel that requires no configuration: the ChatGPT Apps directory. That is a rational choice for their audience, and it is exactly why the category reads as empty from a terminal.
The pattern predicts what closes first. A thin category with many app listings is waiting on a vendor decision to also ship a server — a short step, since the API integration already exists. A thin category with few entries of either kind is waiting on someone to build anything at all, which is a much longer wait.

Check your client before concluding anything
If you work in ChatGPT, a category that looks empty here may be fully served through the Apps directory — the integrations exist, they just are not servers. If you work in Claude Code, Cursor or Windsurf, the ranked count is the number that applies to you, and app listings are not a substitute.
MCPs that work in ChatGPTRoute through automation that already holds the integration
n8n, Zapier and Make maintain vetted connectors for most of the thin categories, with the OAuth work already done. Connecting the agent to the automation platform and letting it drive is usually faster than finding a dedicated server, and it keeps credentials out of the agent.
Automation & workflow MCPsWrap the API yourself, narrowly
A single-purpose server is a couple of hundred lines with FastMCP, and writing it means you choose the scopes — read-only or draft-only is a very reasonable default where the vendor offers nothing so narrow. This is the right move when a thin category has no app listing either.

The honest caveat: this measures what we rank, not everything published. A ranked entry takes real editorial work, so a low count can reflect our backlog rather than the ecosystem's. We treat anything under three as a prompt to go looking. Which MCP categories have the fewest servers?
Education & Learning, Sales & Outreach, Domains and Project Management. Education & Learning carries 0 ranked servers against a median of 7 across all 30 categories. That is a shortage of installable servers specifically — education & learning holds 19 catalog entries in total, 19 of which are ChatGPT app listings rather than servers you configure in a client.
Does a thin category mean no MCP exists for that job?
No, and conflating the two is the most common mistake here. Productivity is the clearest case: 95 entries, 93 of them ChatGPT app integrations, and only 2 that a developer can install in Claude Code or Cursor. The brands have shipped. They shipped apps, not servers.
Why are developer categories so much better served?
Because the people who built MCP servers first were building for their own desk. Analytics & Data, Developer Tools, Databases and Cloud & Infrastructure lead the distribution, and every one of them is something a developer automates for themselves. The thin end is not technically harder — a calendar API is easier to wrap than a Kubernetes cluster — it is simply further from the builder's own workflow.
What should I do if my category is thin?
Check which client you are in first, because the answer differs. In ChatGPT, a thin category is often fully served through the Apps directory. In Claude Code, Cursor or Windsurf you need an actual server, so the realistic paths are routing through a workflow-automation MCP that already holds the vendor integration, or wrapping the vendor API yourself — a focused server is usually a couple of hundred lines.
Is a low count ever your fault rather than the ecosystem’s?
Sometimes, and it is worth saying plainly. A ranked entry requires a full editorial workup, so a category can read as thin because we have not finished the work rather than because nothing exists. We treat a count under three as a prompt to go looking, not as a finding. The counts on this page are what we currently rank, not a census of everything published.
